Well it’s been two weeks since the iPad hit store shelves and unless you’ve been living in a cave somewhere you are well aware of all the attention this popular device is receiving. Although the first batch of iPad’s were sold out quickly one thing there hasn’t been a shortage of is media buzz and hype.
We try our best to keep you updated on much of what’s been going on, but of course it’s hard to keep up with everything especially when it comes to the iPad.
If you are one of the lucky ones who have become the proud owner of this trendy new toy (sorry Apple, we didn’t mean it like that) then you know first hand what all the rave is about. Of course the iPad is more than just a fun new gadget, it has many practical uses and more and more apps continue to be released each day. Everything from business applications, games, digital media apps, the list goes on and on.
Of course when it comes to just about any topic you have those who love the concept, a fair share of critics as well as those who are somewhat neutral and haven’t quite decided what to think just yet. Before getting into all the useful benefits let’s discuss some of the other reactions.
One of the biggest headlines has been the issue that the iPad does not support Flash, Steve Jobs claims the technology is too much of a security risk. In the same breath, speaking of security issues, some universities such as George Washington and Princeton and even the country of Isreal have banned the iPad due to so called Wi-Fi issues. Does this make Steve Jobs a hypocrite, of course not. Is this something being blown out of proportion, most likely. At the risk of being totally unbiased I can’t personally see how the iPad is any more of a security risk than a cell phone or laptop, but of course that’s just my opinion.
Other topics of discussion are things like connectivity issues, the fact that the first generation iPad is not equipped with a camera and others are complaining that their iPhone apps do not scale or display properly on the iPad.
Despite all of this, there is no denying that in such a short period of time the iPad has really changed the way many people look at computing. Some will argue that it’s really just a current trend and that it will fade away quickly while others predict it will continue to dominate the market eventually making things like netbooks and laptops a thing of the past.
The truth is the iPad is quite capable of doing many things. It’s portable, has more functions than most of us can count, is designed with multi-touch capabilities and chances are the device will only improve more and more over time.
The Bottom Line
Of course nobody can predict the future but it’s quite likely the iPad is here to stay. Overall I think Apple deserves two thumbs up for once again revolutionizing the way we do things. There will always be critics, and of course like anything there will always be room for improvement, but I think it’s safe to say that the iPad is the beginning of something great.
